PRESETS / FIELD NOTES

Choose a caption style for the clip, not the trend.

Glass, neon, punch words or plain white? How to match a caption preset to the pace, tone and footage of what you actually made.

Start with the pace of the speech

The fastest way to choose a caption style is to listen to how quickly the person talks. Rapid, energetic delivery suits styles that change on every word, such as a pop-in or a whip. Slow, considered speech looks better with a style that moves less, like a single highlight gliding from word to word.

If you pick a busy preset for calm speech, the captions start to feel impatient, as if they are hurrying the speaker along. If you pick a very quiet preset for fast delivery, the words pile up and the energy drains away. Match the rhythm first; the colors can come later.

Let the tone pick the family

Gradian groups its presets by what they do. Clean styles such as Minimal Clean keep the focus on the person and suit tutorials, interviews and anything you want to feel trustworthy. Bold and boxed styles work for opinions, lists and strong statements. Glow styles like Neon Tube and Aurora Flow bring atmosphere to night footage, music and moodier edits.

Motion styles such as Impacto Verde and The Chuuya are built around one large punch word. They work well for hooks and key lines, and become tiring if every sentence gets the treatment. A good habit is to use a motion style for the opening seconds and a calmer style for the rest, or to save the punch word for the line that matters most.

Check it against the footage

A preset that looks perfect on a dark frame can disappear on a bright beach. Scrub through the whole clip, especially the brightest and busiest shots. Glass and glow styles rely on contrast with the background; boxed styles carry their own background and are safer on unpredictable footage.

Also watch where faces and hands are. Large stacked styles take up a lot of the frame. If they cover the speaker’s mouth or the product you are showing, move the caption lower or choose a style with a smaller footprint.

Commit to one style per series

Viewers recognise a creator by their captions more than you might expect. If each video uses a different preset, the feed looks unplanned. Pick one main style for a series and adjust only the accent color or the size between episodes.

When you find a combination you like, keep the project as a starting point. Opening it again brings back the style, size and placement, so the next episode starts where the last one finished.
